The Best US Airports for Group Travelers: What to Know Before You Fly

When you're coordinating a group trip, the destination airport matters almost as much as the flights themselves. Some airports make it easy to meet up with your group — clear signage, central meeting points, easy transportation options. Others can turn a simple coordination into a logistical nightmare. Here's what to expect at America's most popular group travel destinations. Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL) The world's busiest airport is surprisingly group-friendly. ATL has a centralized domestic terminal system connected by an underground train, so even if your group lands at different gates, you'll all end up at the same baggage claim area. The main challenge: if people are arriving on different airlines from different terminals, plan to meet at the main domestic terminal level rather than inside security. Chicago O'Hare (ORD) O'Hare is massive and can be confusing. International and domestic terminals are separate, and different domestic terminals aren't directly connected inside security. If your group has one international arrival and several domestic, build in at least 90 minutes of buffer — customs and immigration can take 45-60 minutes on busy days. Plan a meeting point outside the terminals near the transportation center. Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) DFW is a hub-and-spoke airport with five terminals arranged in a horseshoe. The Skylink train connects all terminals airside, which is great for passengers in transit. For arriving groups, the challenge is that each terminal has its own separate ground transportation area. Coordinate a specific terminal exit if your group members are arriving into different terminals. Las Vegas (LAS) Harry Reid International is one of the best airports for group arrivals. It's compact, well-signed, and has a centralized baggage claim. Most hotels on the Strip offer direct shuttle service, so if your group misses each other by 20-30 minutes, you can often catch the same shuttle anyway. Miami International (MIA) MIA can be slow, especially for international arrivals. Customs lines can run 60-90 minutes or longer during peak periods. If your group has a mix of US citizens and international travelers, the citizen/resident lane moves significantly faster. Plan for at least a 90-minute buffer if anyone is clearing customs, and pick a meeting point near the rental car center, which is more spacious than the terminal exits. Denver International (DEN) Denver's airport is beautiful but remote — about 25 miles from downtown. For groups, the centralized design works in your favor: all flights arrive and depart from a single main terminal building connected to the concourses by train. Ground transportation is excellent, including the A-Line train to Union Station downtown. Los Angeles International (LAX) LAX is spread across nine terminals in a horseshoe, with no direct airside connections between them. For groups arriving on different airlines, plan for a 20-30 minute walk or shuttle ride between terminals. The best meeting point is outside the terminals at the rideshare pickup area, which was significantly improved in recent years. Tips for Coordinating at Any Airport 1. Pick a meeting point before you fly, not after you land. "I'll text you when I land" never works as well as "meet me at the coffee shop near Terminal B baggage claim." 2. Use real-time flight tracking apps to monitor each other's progress. 3. Build buffer time for baggage claim, customs, and transit between terminals. 4. Have a backup plan for poor cell service — underground baggage claim areas are notorious for dead zones. 5. Use Land Together to find flights that arrive within the same time window — the tighter your arrival gap, the less waiting at the airport. The Best Strategy: Minimize the Gap No matter which airport you're flying into, the easiest way to simplify group arrivals is to find flights that land close together in the first place. When everyone lands within 30-45 minutes of each other, the airport logistics become much less stressful — and your trip starts sooner.
